Insomnia that lasts for one week but less than three weeks is called short term insomnia. On the other hand, long term insomnia lasts for more than three weeks.

Somnambulism is also called as sleepwalking. In this disordered person afflicted with it and will do many activities in the sleep. Sometimes this disorder associated with the behavior problems and poor emotional regulation.

Mood swings

During the sleep disorder, a person will be irritated and not able to talk to anyone. Because mood swings happen again and again during the day and night.

Morning headaches

If the person cannot sleep in the last night properly then he or she may get suffer from the morning headaches.

Increase chances of depression

When the person could not be able to sleep then the chances of depression will be increased. The more healthy you sleep the more your health and mind get conscious.

Poor memory

Consequences of disturbed sleep the person is having the lack of concentration, learning problems due to the poor memory. The person could not able to do the work in proper time.


Everyone knows that what is snoring but most of the people only observe and did not take it seriously. As we know it is loud noise people make while they are breathing in during the sleep.

Not concentrating on any work

Due to a sleeping problem, you cannot do any work. As you know well if we cannot take the proper sleeping hygiene then you could not able to concentrate on your work whether related to office, driving and other categories also.

The other symptoms of sleep disorder are like

  • Constant fatigue
  • Difficult in anger management
  • Slow reactions
  • Emotional instability
  • Feeling sleepy during the time of reading, drive and watching t.v.

There are many reasons that person may suffer from insomnia which are as follows

Stress and anxiety

Stress and anxiety is a huge part of our everyday lives and that is why there is a number of people suffering from insomnia. If you have stress on a constant basis like because of your job, money worries or any other reason then it can lead to chronic insomnia. This is very damaging as it impedes the way we function and decreases our enjoyment of life.

Lack of exercise

Exercise relaxes your body especially if it is light before bedtime. So always remember that if your mind cannot relax then you will have a difficult time to find the sleep that you want.

Cardiovascular disorder

The most common disorder that causes the sleep that is coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Both of this disorder can cause obstructive sleep apnea.

Congestive heart failure is characterized by the inability of the heart to pump sufficient blood in the body. As a result of that blood get accumulated in the veins that lead to the kidneys and the result is getting edema that inflicts a lot of damage in the body organs.

Mental disorder

People who are suffering from a psychological disorder such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, schizophrenia also suffer from insomnia.

Kidney disorders

The old age people mostly suffer from a kidney disorder. When the kidneys are unable to filter the waste substances from the blood then they are not able to maintain a proper balance between salt and water.

Alcohol intoxication

It causes the dehydration to your body as it may put you sleep to fast but that sleep will not be restful. You will keep waking up again and again because at that time your body needs the water.

Irregular schedule of sleeping

If you do not have a daily regular sleeping schedule then it may be the chances that due to irregular working shift. It can be also one of the causes of your sleeping difficulty.

Environmental changes

Many people have usually to a regular nightly routine and a particular set of circumstances which must be in place in order to get good night’s sleep.  If there comes any alteration in this routine then it also upset the physical and emotional balance and lead to sleeplessness nights.


The traveler often complains this and it is one of the primary sources of jet lag.  Sometimes it is minor changes that disturb people most from these like a new pillow, leaving the TV or maybe enough to keep someone awake through the night.

Bad food and drink habits

What we eat and when we eat or drink it matters a lot. It greatly affects the sleep which causes insomnia. With all the modern conveniences we seem to be eating more and more processed food as a part of our normal routine.


Processed food and alcohol have large amounts of sugar. So these stimulants keep your body active while you are trying to go to sleep.  Also, you should avoid junk food and fast food that cause indigestion.

Pregnancy and menopause

Pregnant women, as well as those who are going through menopause, are most probably experiencing a lack of sleep because inside their body the certain hormone changes occur.

Lifestyle choices

Sometimes we are not aware of just how much our lifestyle are affecting the sleeping patterns and what we can do to ensure to get the good night sleep. So by making the lifestyle choices we are not only affecting our sleeping pattern but also affect our health.
